Homily on the New Evangelization Feb. 4-5, 2012

Good Morning. I would like to begin my talk on the New Evangelization with a story. Once there was a farmer who was known for miles around for raising the largest and sweetest watermelons. One year, his garden was blessed with abundant rainfall and plenty of sunshine. As his melons grew larger and larger, the biggest ever, he heard disturbing noises coming from his melon patch. The melons were fighting. The farmer dropped his hoe and hurried to the patch. “What’s the trouble?” He exclaimed. All the watermelons were yelling, screaming, and bickering with each other. Second Session: Notes from Pastoral Council

From Len, Chair of our New Evangelization Committee, and facilitator of the second session of the study guide at Pastoral Council:

It seems to me that the members of Pastoral Council, in their sharing, turn their focus towards three areas:

1.  Developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ - through personal prayer and scripture, Eucharist
2.  Creating a community of love and trust - through fellowship, faith sharing, hospitality, intentional encouragement and support
3.  Catechisis - Adult education, preparation programs, youth programs, learning our Catholic beliefs, public relations campaigns

In Spiritual Life development, we often emphasize the focus that has affected us most deeply.  In fact, this often determines where we exercise our giftedness in ministry.  If we are to become the message that we wish to convey to the world, personally and through our community, then maybe we will have to begin to see the value of each area of focus, and then work together in solidarity towards a common mission.

Lloyd first arrived at our parish as pastor, and after we had some of our preliminary discussions, he asked me:  Len, what would you like to do in the parish.  My thoughts went immediately to the New Evangelization, so I told him I would like to do something in connection with that.  So for the last few months I have been giving a lot of thought to this process that the Archbishop has introduced into the Archdiocese.  This week, Fr. Lloyd asked if I would share a little about the New Evangelization with you in a 10-minute homily, so I have struggled to try to convey this to you in a meaningful way.
